1963 Corvette Sting Ray Styling Influences
- Q-Corvette: Under the direction of Chevrolet’s general manager, Ed Cole, the Q-Chevrolet program produced the 1957 Q-Corvette XP-84 concept, which was driven by Chevrolet’s goal of building front-engine, rear-transaxle vehicles.
- Corvette SS: Chevrolet racing effort led by Zora Arkus-Duntov that was canceled shortly after the AMA’s ban on factory racing in 1957. The Corvette SS’ underpinnings became Bill Mitchell’s personal project—restyled and renamed the Stingray racer—with new styling tweaks by Larry Shinoda that were based off the Q-Corvette XP-96 convertible concept.
- Corvette Stingray Racer: Peter Brock and Larry Shinoda helped design the Stingray concept (sometimes also expressed as Sting Ray) which was built privately in 1959 under the direction of GM styling chief, Bill Mitchell.
- XP-720 Concept: Design study precursor to the production 1963 Sting Ray that fine-tuned the drivetrain layout, interior space, and exterior dimensions of the C2 Corvette.
- Split-Window Influences: Chevrolet styling head Bill Mitchell is commonly attributed with being influenced for the split-window rear glass by the Bugatti 57SC “Atlantique” coupe, the 1937 Adler Trumpf Rennlimousine, and Harley Earl’s Oldsmobile Golden Rocket concept car.
