Historic Kenmore Plantation, Fredericksburg, Virginia

This beautiful plantation house and its surrounding buildings were built in 1776 by Fielding Lewis for his wife Betty, who was also the sister of George Washington.  Lewis sank a lot of money into the war effort against Britain during the American fight for independence, and apparently his ghost is still concerned over the state of his finances.  He has often been seen sitting and going over his papers with a sour look on his face, and he has also been heard pacing the first floor hall very heavily.  Staff have also reported seeing doorknobs turn on their own.

This Wonderful Bird Grows Strawberry-Like Plumage During The Breeding Season

The more you think you’ve seen all the beauties this world holds, the furthest to the truth you find out you are. Maybe unicorns are not true, but this bird you will see in the following pictures looks just as magical and mystical as them, but with one difference – it is true, it exists. Let’s get to know strawberry finches together more closely.

With so many stunning bird species out there, they never cease to amaze with their wide range of colors, sizes, and other traits. Some of them have intricate and stunning plumage that can be compared to a fruit or a berry. This is especially true for a species of birds that are unsurprisingly called strawberry finches. These small, sparrow-sized birds of the family Estrildidae can be easily recognized for their scarlet body paired with tiny white dots.
The Red Munia or Strawberry Finch or Red Avadavat (Amandava amandava) is a sparrow-sized bird of the Munia or Silverbill family. They are popular cage birds due to the colorful plumage of the males in their breeding season. These birds are very small in size ranging from 3-4inches (9-10cm).

Their natural range stretches from the Indus valley of Pakistan to the plains of the Brahmaputra extending south to the peninsula of India. The species has four named populations. Amandava amandava amandava – The nominate subspecies is found in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan;Amandava amandava flavidiventris – The Burmese form is also found in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam);Amandava amandava punicea – The form in Java is – also found in Cambodia.
They inhabit the flat plains and are usually seen in places with tall grasses or crops often near water. Introduced populations also exist in southern Spain, Brunei, Fiji, Egypt, Malaysia, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore and Hawaii. In their natural habitat, they breed in the monsoon season. They build a globular nest made of grass blades. The usual clutch consists of 5 or 6 white eggs.
In this species of waxbill the hen’s upper body is brown-gray while her underbelly to undertail are yellow-gray. Both sexes have random white spots throughout there plumage, bright red beaks, flesh colored legs and the eyes are black encircled by red-brown. The male’s plumage resembles that of the hen when he is not in breeding condition. However, once in breeding plumage the males turn a dark bright red color. If enviromental conditions are lacking the male is known to turn black.
These birds do best in a large planted aviary with mixed species. If you are wanting them to breed you can try seperating them by pairs into large flights. Some people claim they will breed in breeding cages but we prefer to house them in single pair planted flight cages. Some heat will be required durring winter months so these birds are best suited for large indoor aviaries during winter. In the summer time they will thrive and come into best color in outdoor aviaries. This species of bird is actualy the only waxbill that has a true song. The song reminds me of a melody of tiny silver bells somewhat resembling that of a Weaver but it is more monotonous. Only the males sing!

Survive A Lion Attack

Most lions flee, even from people on foot, but an attack is a possibility and knowing how to react could save your life.

Male Lion

Most lions flee, even from people on foot, but an attack is a possibility and knowing how to react could save your life.

Walking safaris are a relatively new concept, and lions still perceive humans on foot as a threat.

Conversely, as the biggest tourist attraction in many African wildlife reserves, lions have become quite habituated to vehicles and can be approached to within a few feet. Indeed, they often appear totally oblivious to them, despite the excited chattering of their occupants and the clicking of cameras.

Lion behaviour varies from region to region. When I first went to Zambia’s North Luangwa National Park, it was virtually devoid of tourists, so the lions weren’t habituated.

Many of our early encounters with lions there (while we were building a camp) developed into mock charges, which was disconcerting to say the least.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE ATTACKED BY A LION

  • Being charged by a lion when you are on foot is extremely frightening. It is difficult to stop yourself from bolting, but that is likely to prompt an attack. A lion charge is usually accompanied by a deep growling sound that reverberates through your very core.

  • It is vital to stand your ground, perhaps retreating very slowly, but to continue facing the lion while clapping your hands, shouting and waving your arms around to make yourself look bigger. Most charges are mock charges, so you will usually be fine.
  • And remember: hold your ground! Never run or turn your back.

HOW TO AVOID BEING ATTACKED BY A LION

  • Do not approach too closely, especially in the case of mating lions or lionesses with cubs.
  • Different circumstances trigger different behavior. During courtship, male lions are often extremely aggressive and should not be approached, even in a vehicle.

  • A lioness with cubs is naturally protective and should be given lots of space. And being predominantly nocturnal, lions lose their inherent fear of humans at night and become much more dangerous and prone to attack.
  • Be more cautious at night. Avoid camping in areas of high lion density – maintain a watch throughout the night if worried.

‘We have nothing to do with the idea of artists as solitary beings’

In the mid-1960s, the American ceramicist Paul Soldner had an idea: to renovate a number of old Colorado farm buildings and create an arts retreat in the spectacular village of Snowmass, in a Rocky Mountains valley. Teaming up with local property developers — who were keen to add a cultural offering to an area already popular for skiing — he created Anderson Ranch Arts Center, which opened its doors in 1966.

The aim was to provide a place for arts education without any of the formality or pressures of a degree programme. ‘It’s a centre, not a school’, said Soldner, who died in 2011 at the age of 89. ‘We’re different.’

Accompanied by his peers, including photographer Cherie Hiser, sculptor Peter Voulkos and woodworker Sam Maloof, Soldner taught just a handful of students at first. More than half a century on, that figure has risen to 1,250 a year, with Anderson Ranch now recognised as an arts centre of international significance. In the past few years, Christo, Marina Abramovic and Frank Stella have all visited campus and worked with students; Ai Weiwei is set to arrive later this summer.

We caught up with Anderson Ranch’s executive director, Nancy Wilhelms, to find out more.

If you had to describe Anderson Ranch in one word, what would that be?

Nancy Wilhelms: ‘Community. We have nothing to do with the idea of artists as solitary beings, working away alone. Here we have an open-door policy where people are constantly interacting and sharing ideas, whether over lunch in the communal café, in the dorms, or in the various studios whose doors are always open.’

‘One of the joys of this place is when the artists move around campus and engage with the students, in some cases discussing and critiquing their work, in others just having a friendly chat.’

‘Class sizes are kept deliberately small, meaning that each student gets a lot of individual attention. People of all ages and abilities will find their place here. We encourage them to experiment, be bold — and have fun.’

Majestic Sigmaringen Castle

Sigmaringen Castle was the princely castle and seat of government for the Princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Situated in the Swabian Alb region of Baden-Wurttemberg this castle dominates the skyline of the town of Sigmaringen.
The castle was rebuilt following a fire in 1893, and only the towers of the earlier medieval fortress remain. Schloss Sigmaringen was a family estate of the Swabian Hohenzollern family, a cadet branch of the Hohenzollern family, from which the German Emperors and kings of Prussia came. The castle and museums may be visited throughout the year, on guided tours.
